Gatto Mammone
Elisa Seitzinger is an Italian illustrator and visual artist known for her bold, symbolic style inspired by medieval iconography, folk art, and tarot imagery. Based in Turin, she has collaborated with publishers, museums, and cultural institutions, and her work has been exhibited internationally. Her distinctive visual language combines contemporary illustration with references to mythology, religion, and esoteric traditions.
Gatto Mammone is similar to an ancient witch. At night, its black fur absorbs the light, while a pale, tearful moon glows upon its face—a sign of its magical powers. As it crosses the silent fields, it always encounters two white hares busy multiplying life beneath the stars. He is the guardian of shadow - they are symbols of fertility. It is said that as long as the Gatto Mammone and the two hares meet beneath the moon, the world will preserve its fragile balance between mystery and rebirth.
In Italian folklore, the Gatto Mammone is a legendary creature: a huge, frightening black cat which used to scare children, much like the Boogeyman. Today, the name can also describe a very affectionate cat that never wants to leave its human’s side. In the end, the interpretation rests with the viewer: does the Gatto Mammone arrive as a force of harm, or as a quiet protector?
